Michel Foucault (1926­1984) was a philosophy and literature professor 
who taught at numerous European universities. His 1961 book Madness  
and Civilization  , won him the Centre of Scientific Research Medal 
(France). His social analysis of the human sciences attempts to uncover 
the “archeological form” or system of intellectual knowledge in a 
culture.
